Please join us on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. with an in-person meeting at the

 Vittoria Community Centre.

Kathleen Heslin

Kathleen has been quilting for about 12 years, making about 50 quilts during that time. For the most part

she designs her quilts & hand dyes upcycled fabrics. She began with hand quilting, moved to stationary

machine & most recently moveable machine quilting. She has won awards for her quilts in the United States

and in Canada. She has retired to Port Dover with her husband where she also enjoys line dancing & pottery.

Linda McLaren

Linda McLaren is a wife, mom, quilter, biker, tekkie, farmer, rebel … not necessarily in that order!

Linda started quilting when her littles were little. With roots in traditional quilting, she has ventured into the

world of modern quilts and quilting for others. Her first longarm was acquired in 2008 to make basting

quilts easier, and she started longarm quilting for others in 2017. Her definition of a good day is one where

she learns something new. An excellent day is when she can collaborate, learn, and teach with other

creatives. Currently President of the London Modern Quilt Guild, she appreciates all the inspiration and

fellowship that can come from quilting guilds and the quilting community.

Convert Traditional Patterns into Paper Pieced Patterns Workshop

Join Us to Learn How to Convert Traditional Patterns into Paper Pieced Patterns at a Workshop with Donna Prystie

Please not that this is NOT a workshop that will teach you how to paper piece. Participants are expected to have a good foundation in the practice of paper piecing (foundation, paper, or freezer paper).

You will want to join us at this workshop if you want to learn the principles involved in converting your patterns into paper piecing.  In this workshop, we will limit our patterns to those that contain straight seams only.  We will not be sewing curved seams.

These are two examples of converting patterns to paper pieced blocks.

Date:

May 28, 2024, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Maximum number of participants:

20

Registration Fee:

members $35.00, non-members $45.00

Location:

Vittoria Community Centre

In the morning, we will work together on several patterns, beginning with fairly simple ones and progressing as we are comfortable. You will learn how to:

  • draw your new pattern using ¼” graph paper
  • identify the order in which the pieces will be sewn
  • avoid T-intersections
  • identify sections of the pattern that must be sewn separately
  • colour your final pattern to help choose appropriate fabric/colour for each piece

In the afternoon, we will work on our own individual patterns brought from home.

Think of it as a ‘choose your own quilty’ adventure pattern.

Activities will include monthly instructions released on our blog, Zoom meetings and in-person instruction before guild meetings.

Accuquilt Go! Big Fabric Cutter Equipment

This equipment is located at the Simcoe Public Library in the Maker Space.

The NCQG and TQG were instrumental in having this equipment installed at the Library in 2019.

Recently new dies and new cutting mats were purchased by the library.

Benefits:

  • 6 layers of fabric can be cut at a time on each die.
  • There is no Shoulder or hand strain from cutting.
  • There are no dog ears for pieces such as Flying Geese, as they are pre-trimmed. This helps with accuracy.

The link to an 8-minute video tutorial on YouTube – AccuQuiltGo Big Electric Cutter (dated September 2014) is here.

Find more information (Cutting Reference List and List of Available Dies) under the Resources tab on the Guild’s website.

Community Outreach

Our Guild has been able to donate quilts and many other items to the Children’s Aid Society of Haldimand & Norfolk, Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services, Haldimand-Norfolk Reach (Union House) and Norfolk Pregnancy & Family Resource Centre again this year. Thanks to all those who were able to contribute.
