Lorna Shapiro is from Vancouver, B.C. and her presentation is “Dare to Design”. Her lectures focus on helping quilters without formal training on design, learn to design quilts that speak to their hearts.
Lorna started her quilting and design journey about 15 years ago. Looking for a joyful activity, she tried making a quilt for her daughter and her husband. Lorna was instantly passionate about quilting and about blending a Japanese aesthetic with a contemporary sense of design. Over the intervening years, she has developed contacts in Japan who provide her with the fabrics she uses in her designs. Also, Lorna has been continually refining her design aesthetic. The Pacific West Coast, where she lives and works, offers her daily inspiration through its shapes, textures, and natural colours.
She has a shop called Quilter’s Dream Fabrics and it is one of the largest quilt stores in the area with a wide variety of fabrics. She believes in designing quilts that speak to our hearts and aesthetic preferences, not necessarily quilts that conform to someone else’s rules! She does have patterns for these types of quilters, though.
Lorna has done many lectures and has taught courses at Quilt Canada.
